Herodes Atticus’ Villa

The villa of Herodes Atticus in Eva / Loukou Kynourias is, probably, the most important monument of the Roman imperial times in the Greek area, as evidenced by the large scale and especially the extraordinary wealth of architectural remains, sculptures and mosaics. The monument came to light after twenty one years of systematic excavations by Dr. Theodore Spyropoulos (1980-2001) and Dr. George Spyropoulos (1990-2001).

The villa belonged to the wealthy patron Herod Atticus from Marathon, the most important personage of the Roman Imperial period and late antiquity, as attested by the inscriptions. Herodes villa, which was completed during the reign of Hadrian (117-138 AD), was a huge complex, a real town, built according to the dominant axis of the Greco-Roman urbanism.

The central core of the villa, which exceeds 20,000 square meters, is the large rectangular courtyard, a huge outdoor garden, decorated with various sculptures. An artificial river turned it into a real island , in which Herod could pass only with portable bridges.

The older and more formal structure of the villa is the Basilica of the north side, a site where works of art and religious statues were collected. The south side of the villa has three major buildings: Temple-Tomb of Antinous, baths, octagonal outpost.

Finally on the west side, behind the Nymphaeum is another Basilica.
